Together the Hocking
Hills State Park areas offer over 25 miles of hiking trails. Many
have huge cascading waterfalls, breathtaking cliff overlooks and
unique rock formations. Several, like Ash Cave and Conkle's Hollow,
offer handicap accessible trails. All but Conkle's Hollow (a nature
preserver) allow responsible pet owners to hike with their dogs as
long as they are on a leash.
The park offers year
around programs including night hikes, owl prowls and special events
like Winter Hike.
Within a short driving
distance of Springwood Cabins are such parks as Lake Logan State
Park, Rock Bridge State Nature Preserver, Lake Hope State Park,
Wayne National Forest, Tar Hollow, Clear Creek Metro Park and
Hocking Hills State Forest.

A little bit about the Hocking Hills
The Hocking Hills region of Southern Ohio
is a geologically and ecologically unique place. As the Wisconsin
glacier from the last ice age pushed down from Canada across the
flat swamps and plains of northern Ohio, it stopped just a few miles
north of the Hocking Hills and in the process, forced a southern
flow of flora and fauna from the north. As a result, there is
plant and animal life native to northern Canada that is found
uniquely in this small area of the foothills of the Appalachian
Mountains. Before even these massive glaciers came to Ohio,
water runoff from the formation of the Appalachian Mountains carried
with it the sand and gravel which formed the building blocks of the
rolling hills of Southeastern Ohio. Almost as fast as the hills were
built, the same water began carving caves, rock outcroppings and
waterfalls in our amazing wonderland of nature. The area is rich
with prehistoric and Native American history. |
